Paul Brayton Returns to the Furniture Market with a New Brand
by Sheila Kim | Thursday, March 31, 2011
After almost two decades of focusing on textiles, design industry pioneer is returning to his roots with the launch of Paul Brayton Designs Furniture. attendees will get the first look at these high-end European and American furniture designs this June.
It’s been some 40 years since Paul Brayton started his well-known contract and hospitality furnishings company Brayton International. Industry giant later purchased the business, which had become a leader in lounge furniture for commercial markets. But the manufacturer wanted the expertise of Mr. Brayton himself, too, and appointed him as president and CEO of a division overseeing the various companies that Steelcase had purchased (Brayton International, Vecta, Metro, Atelier International, Designtex, Details, and Stow Davis).
After an illustrious career in contract furnishings, Mr. Brayton struck out on his own again in 1993, launching his textile company Paul Brayton Designs. The company has since produced award-winning textile, leather, and faux leather lines for the contract, hospitality, and health-care sectors. (Some of the major furniture manufacturers who’ve specified these collections include Cabot Wrenn, Carolina Business Furniture, DarRan, and David Edward, among many others).
Still, all that success hasn’t made Mr. Brayton complacent. In recent years, the Steelcase division that purchased Brayton International has re-branded itself as the much-celebrated , but with that came a shift in focus and thus a new need in the market. Using his unique perspective and experience, Mr. Brayton is therefore launching his new furniture brand. And while he’s been a staple at NeoCon year after year, it’s only fitting that he launches the collection officially at this year’s show. The new brand will be presented in booth 8-1087 at the Merchandise Mart on June 13. In case you’re wondering, the environmentally responsible Paul Brayton is indeed planning to utilize sustainable manufacturing processes for the furniture as well, and will produce the lines locally in the North Carolina Triad area.
